Benefits of Having an Emotional Support Animal Letter

Emotional Support Animal letters permit ESAs to live free of charge in pet-free housing or allow owners to forgo pet fees. Letters can be used in dorms and most hotels.

In the US, it is up to the airline to allow an ESA onboard. The vast majority of national airlines do not allow ESAs, but several international airlines such as Air France and Lufthansa permit ESA letters.

Frequently Asked Questions About Documentation, Regulations, Landlords, Service Dogs, and More

What is an Emotional Support Animal (ESA)?
An ESA is an animal that provides therapeutic support to a person with a mental or emotional disability. Unlike service dogs, ESAs don't require specialized training — but you do need a letter from a licensed mental health professional.
Can my ESA live in no-pet housing?
Yes. Under the Fair Housing Act, landlords must make reasonable accommodations for tenants with ESAs, even in no-pet properties. An ESA letter from a licensed therapist is the key document.
Do I need a therapist letter for my ESA?
For housing accommodations, yes — a letter from a licensed mental health professional is required. Our licensed therapists can evaluate you and issue letters via secure video consultation.
Are ESAs allowed on airplanes?
As of 2021, most major US airlines no longer allow ESAs in the cabin for free. Some international airlines such as Air France and Lufthansa still permit ESA letters. Check with your airline before booking.
